Summer Safe: Securing Your Home While You're Away

Summer is officially on its way, and for many of us, that means planning exciting getaways and much-needed vacations! While you're dreaming of sandy beaches or mountain trails, it's also the perfect time to make sure your home is secure while you're away. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring peace of mind, allowing you to fully relax and enjoy your time off.

Here are some key steps to take before you lock up and leave for your summer adventures:

1. Make Your Home Look Occupied

One of the best deterrents for potential intruders is making your home appear as though someone is still there.

• Timers for Lights: Invest in smart plugs or simple lamp timers to turn lights on and off at varying times, mimicking a natural occupancy pattern. Consider lights in different rooms, not just the front.
• Mail and Newspaper Hold: Don't let a overflowing mailbox or pile of newspapers signal your absence. Arrange for a hold on your mail and newspaper delivery. The USPS offers a convenient online service for this!
• Lawn Care: If you'll be gone for an extended period, arrange for a neighbor or a lawn service to mow your lawn. An overgrown yard is a clear sign of an unoccupied home.
• Trash Cans: If your trash day falls while you're away, ask a trusted neighbor to wheel your bins to the curb and bring them back in.

2. Lock Down All Entry Points

This might seem obvious, but it's worth a thorough double-check.

• All Windows and Doors: Ensure every window and door, including those on upper floors and in the basement, is securely locked.

• Check-Ins: Ask them to periodically check on your home, bring in any packages, water plants, and generally ensure everything looks normal.
• Emergency Contact: Make sure they have your contact information and know how to reach you in an emergency.

5. Consider a Home Security System

If you don't already have one, now might be a good time to consider a home security system. Many modern systems offer remote monitoring, alerts, and even smart features that allow you to control lights or view cameras from your phone.

6. Unplug Electronics
